The Town of Manteo dedicated the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse on Saturday, September 25, 2004. The lighthouse is on the Manteo waterfront, on the east side of Roanoke Island.

The Roanoke Marshes Light is an exterior reconstruction of the square cottage-style screw-pile lighthouse which stood at the southern entrance to Croatan Sound, near Wanchese. It was decommissioned in 1955, and lost in the Sound during an attempt to move it to private property.

The lense is a 4th order Fresnel lens with a fixed white light and is an active aid to navigation, guiding boats into Shallowbag Bay.

The new Roanoke Marshes Light houses historical and educational activities under the auspices of the North Carolina Maritime Museum.

The George Washington Creef Boathouse, a branch of the North Carolina Maritime Museum, is a collaboration of the NC Maritime Museum and Roanoke Island Festival Park that came into being in 1998 at the Town of Manteo's historic working boatshop on the downtown waterfront. The boathouse is one of three branches of the maritime museum that exhibit North Carolina's boat-building heritage and culture.

The Boathouse is named after George Washington Creef, a local builder who developed the Shad boat, a unique style of workboat well-suited to the surrounding waters of the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds. The Shad boat is designated as the State Boat of North Carolina. The museum has a number of small watercraft on display representing the region's maritime heritage. Some of the watercraft exhibits include an 1883 Creef Shad boat, spritsail skiffs, and a 1948 Davis Runabout.

The Museum is a working boatshop where volunteers and staff take on projects including small craft restoration, exhibit design, and new boat construction. The Boathouse was the site of construction for the Elizabeth II, a replica of the ships said to have brought the famous Lost Colony to Roanoke Island in 1587. This, and several other restored traditional sailing watercraft, grace the waters of Shallowbag Bay in front of the museum.

In 2001, volunteers built 8 Optimist Prams for use in the Museum Junior Sailing Program. The primary project for 2002 was a replica 25-foot Shad Boat, funded through a grant from the Percy and Elizabeth Meekins Trust. It is a major focus of the museum's educational and interpretive programming. The Friends of the Museum provides support for the shop's schedule of classes in traditional techniques and for the Junior and Community Sailing programs. Extensive repairs and renovations were made to the structure after Hurricane Isabel in September of 2003.

The North Carolina Maritime Museum on Roanoke Island is located in the George Washington Creef Boathouse at 106 Fernando Street, on the historic downtown Manteo waterfront.

Roanoke Island provides a backdrop for a variety of cultural, historic, and outdoor recreational activities, uniquely intermingled.

Other close by attractions include:
The Lost Colony Outdoor Drama, Roanoke Island Festival Park, the North Carolina Aquarium and the Elizabethan Gardens. Over 1 mile of downtown boardwalk connects the marina, waterfront gazebo, a playground and the Festival Park, while miles of coastline on the Albemarle and Croatan Sounds afford many opportunities to enjoy the area's maritime present and past, including the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, and the George Washington Creef Boathouse.
